Even without physical exertion, you may notice sweat forming and an unpleasant odor. It’s perfectly normal for people to sweat in order to regulate their body temperature. However, if excessive sweating becomes a burden, it makes sense to consider treatment. Excessive sweating can be very unpleasant. If you notice clearly wet patches on your T-shirt under your armpits even at low temperatures and without physical exertion, hyperhidrosis could be the cause. At our practice for aesthetic and plastic surgery, we are happy to offer you options to counteract this unpleasant sweating.
In medicine, hyperhidrosis refers to excessive sweat production or pathological sweating. The causes can be congenital or result from other health issues such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or menopause in women. Once other medical conditions have been ruled out, surgical removal of the sweat glands or their inactivation using a medication may be considered. Most sweat glands are not located in the armpits, but on the soles of the feet and the palms of the hands. If you suffer from sweat stains under your armpits, you should consult a doctor before undergoing sweat gland removal or Botox treatment to determine whether the excessive sweating is a symptom of a condition such as diabetes or thyroid dysfunction.
Surgical Method: Sweat gland suction is a new surgical treatment for excessive sweating in the underarm area (axillary hyperhidrosis).
The goal of the treatment is to remove the sweat glands. During the procedure, the apocrine and eccrine glands, which lie directly beneath the skin, are suctioned out or curetted. As a rule, surgical sweat gland suction can reduce sweating to a normal level comparable to that of people who do not suffer from hyperhidrosis. In extreme cases, sweating can even be reduced to zero.
Surgical suction of the axillary sweat glands is currently the most effective procedure for treating primary hyperhidrosis. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is minimally invasive. Compared to other procedures, it is associated with fewer complications and yields very good and lasting results. The success of the surgery depends on the surgeon’s experience, and skin necrosis may occur. Therefore, we recommend having this procedure performed only by a specialist such as Dr. Münzberg at specialized clinics for plastic and aesthetic surgery.
This is a minimally invasive procedure that can achieve lasting therapeutic results. The surgery typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes, and you will be able to return to work after about 3 to 4 days.
Treatment via injection: Instead of surgery, a muscle-paralyzing substance such as botulinum toxin, better known as Botox, can be administered to reduce underarm sweating for about 8 months. The effects last approximately 8 to 12 months. A muscle-relaxing substance is injected with a thin cannula at specific points in the underarm area (approximately 10 to 15 small injections). No scars remain visible, and you will be able to return to work after a one-day rest period.
Dr. Münzberg would be happy to explain all the advantages and disadvantages of both treatment options to you during a consultation at his practice.
Sweat gland suction can be performed safely and reliably under the guidance of an experienced surgeon. The results are long-lasting and satisfactory. Mild sensory disturbances may occur if small superficial skin nerves are irritated. Postoperatively, swelling and redness may occur in the surgical area as a result of the procedure. If the procedure is too radical, there is a risk of skin necrosis.
